Plain weird

Seen in a sweet shop, Strand, 2 October.

Who put it there?

Who are people likely, at a glance, to think put it there? I mean, it’s got website addresses at the bottom, and everything.

It’s just promoting a consultation, isn’t it?

Oh, wait…is that a suggested answer there on the left?

Is that even what a “real” plain-pack box looks like?

Did the shop owner get paid to put it there? Why else would he be interested?

So who looks at this sort of thing? The Advertising Standards Authority? (But what is it even advertising?)

Hmm.

  1. Paul – The quality of the poster and the deliberate obfuscation makes me think this is almost certainly paid for by the print & packaging industry lobbyists, who claim that plain packs will force them to fire thousands of innocent employees. For more see Printweek articles, list via Google using this search [tobacco packaging site:printweek.com]

  2. Paul says:

That’s very interesting Rob – I’d have expected it to be the tobacco barons. Those poor packaging people – who knew that we had to keep them in business like this?

  3. Oh the barons are there sure enough, back in the shadows. By using their suppliers to fight the battle for them, they can dress it up as a social issue, and at the same time claim not to be involved. It’s creating quite an upheaval in the printing industry…
